Women's Mental Health in Gynecology and Obstetrics

The Women's Mental Health in Gynecology and Obstetrics session recognises what clinical evidence has long confirmed that mental health is inseparable from physical health, and that women navigating pregnancy, childbirth, infertility, menopause, and gynecologic illness face unique and often underaddressed psychological challenges that demand dedicated clinical attention.

Despite significant advances in obstetric and gynecologic medicine, mental health conditions affecting women in the reproductive context remain widely underdiagnosed and undertreated. Perinatal mental health disorders, including antenatal depression and anxiety, postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder, affect a substantial proportion of women globally, cutting across all socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and healthcare systems. The consequences of unaddressed perinatal mental illness extend beyond the individual woman, impacting infant development, family functioning, and long-term maternal health outcomes.

This session brings together psychiatrists, obstetricians, gynecologists, psychologists, midwives, and allied health professionals to examine the full spectrum of mental health conditions encountered in women's reproductive healthcare, from the psychological impact of infertility diagnosis and treatment to anxiety surrounding high-risk pregnancies, the emotional toll of gynecologic cancer, and the hormonal and psychological dimensions of menopause. Delegates will explore validated screening tools for routine integration into antenatal and postnatal care, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches that are safe for use during pregnancy and lactation, and models of care that embed mental health support within mainstream obstetric and gynecologic services.

By elevating mental health as a core pillar of women's reproductive healthcare, this session aims to inspire meaningful change in clinical practice, service design, and professional education — ensuring that no woman faces the challenges of her reproductive life without the psychological support she deserves.
