Title: Predictors of uptake of family planning methods immediately after delivery in four Hospitals in Rwanda

Abstract

Background: In developing countries women of reproductive age who want to avoid pregnancy are not using modern contraceptive method. Postpartum family planning is needed to address unmet need for family planning. There is paucity of data on predictors of uptake of postpartum family planning in Rwanda. Family Planning on Rwanda is paid through the insurance system in Rwanda ease the access on it, it is easy to all women in need of it to have access on it as in any Health system level (Health Center, District Hospital or referral Hospital) they provide Family Planning. This study is to determine predictors of modern family planning method in four hospitals in Rwanda.
Methodology: This is a cross- sectional study using quantitative methods conducted in 4 Public Hospitals in Rwanda namely CHUK, CHUB, Rwamagana and at Muhima hospitals (Sample size was 400 women who had given birth immediately after delivery before discharge from the hospital.
Results: Postpartum family planning was estimated at 94.3%. Religion and reproductive intention were not significantly associated with uptake of postpartum family planning with p values of 0.025;0.02 respectively.
Conclusion: Religion and reproductive intention were significantly associated with uptake of postpartum family planning with p values of 0.025;0.02 respectively. This means that interventions to increase uptake in PPFP should target specifically groups with intention to limit births as well as those are much committed and firm in their religions.

Thomas Ugiruwatuma is a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has been serving in Clinical services for 7 years before joining the residency, has administration experience where he has been in charge of Clinical services in Hospital and has been Chief Medical officer in Peace Keeping Mission. He has also research experience where he won Grant on contributing to the reproductive women and Girls.
