Title: Feto-maternal outcome in covid-19 infected pregnant women

Abstract

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection has been declared as pandemic by the WHO. There is a strong epidemiological evidence that viruses during pregnancy increases the risk of severity and mortality. CDC has published that pregnancy increases the risk of death and severity of illness with Covid-19 infection and these women develop complications and some may even require ventilatory support. Data regarding vertical transmission is also not much. Considering all these aspects, the present study was conducted to evaluate the fetal and maternal outcome in Covid-19 infected pregnant women at our institution.
Methods: Pregnant women presenting to the institution with symptoms of Covid-19 were enrolled in this study during the period May 2020 to May 2021. They were followed till their delivery. The fetal and maternal outcomes were evaluated.
Results: We had included 40 pregnant women, of which 15 did not deliver. 25 pregnant women delivered. The mean age of women was 25.7 ± 2.88 years. Fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath were the commonest presenting symptoms. Majority of the women in third trimester (82.5%) had Covid-19 infection. Equal prevalence of lower segment cesarean section and normal vaginal delivery was seen. Maternal mortality rate was 12%. There were in all 4 (16%) neonatal deaths. 1 (4.8%) neonate was found to be Covid-19 positive.
Conclusion: Covid-19 infection had an adverse impact on both the maternal and neonatal outcome, with vertical transmission seen in 1 neonate. Third trimester of pregnancy is most affected by Covid-19 infection. All the pregnant women with Covid-19 should be well informed about the adverse impact of this virus on maternal and neonatal outcome.
