Title: Period poverty and menstrual hygiene management in Malaysia from the public health perspective

Abstract

The onset of menarche is depicted as the key indicator in pubertal development. It serves as a biological as well as a social measure of the transition of a girl from childhood period to adolescence or the younger adulthood. Period poverty is a condition when a menstruating person is unable to manage their menstruation properly due to any of these four factors; lack of product, lack of clean water, sanitation and disposal management, lack of education on menstruation and privacy to manage menstruation. Menstrual hygiene is depicted as the measure which is vital for the empowerment of women and girls as well as important for mental, physical, and social well-being. The well-known fact regarding the menstrual taboo is that it causes significant challenges in menstrual management. Subsequently, it causes adverse reproductive health outcomes and leads to social ostracization, disease and death. In agendas 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal, the topic gets mentioned to make sure that menstrual hygiene receives a place and all the conditions associated with it will be eliminated. Consequently, the women’s quality of life will be improved. This paper addresses the implications of period poverty and the importance of menstrual hygiene management and from the public health perspective.

Biography

Nor Faiza Mohd Tohit is a medical doctor by background. She has undergone extensive training as a public health personnel, specializing in women's health, adolescent health and mental health. She is active in educating the public on various public health issues through online platforms, newspapers and health talks. She is a reviewer for several public health journals. Her research interest include period poverty, community mental health, sexual grooming and sexual and reproductive health awareness for adults and children. She has published several books and research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
