Title: Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome with its bio-psychosocial-spiritual aspects: A case report

Abstract

Background: Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a congenital disorder characterized by aplasia of the uterus and upper part of the vagina in women and is very rare at 1:5000 births. It can be treated with vaginoplasty. However, the disease and the surgery can affect the bio-psychosocial-spiritual aspects of the sufferer. This case report presents the negative bio-psychosocial-spiritual impact of women with MRKH syndrome.
Case illustration: A 21-year-old, nulliparous woman came to the hospital with complaints of not being able to have sexual intercourse with her husband and never having menstruation. The patient was diagnosed with MRKH syndrome. Vaginoplasty was performed on the patient. The patient was asked to fill out the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS 42) questionnaire, which is a questionnaire to measure the level of stress, anxiety, and depression containing 42 questions before and after surgery.
Discussion: The results of the DASS 42 questionnaire showed that after surgery, there was a very severe level of depression and anxiety compared to before surgery. The bio-psychosocial-spiritual model is a holistic approach between the interaction of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of patient care and patient well-being.
Conclusion: Examination of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects in patients with agenesis uteri can help in managing the adverse effects of depression and anxiety about the diagnosis. Holistic intervention is needed by providing counseling and mentoring.
