Title: Exploring complementary and alternative medicine usage among PCOS patients: A health belief model and health locus of control perspective

Abstract

Background of the study: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common endocrinopathy in women of childbearing age worldwide. It is considered an incurable life-long disease by conventional medicine. Delayed diagnosis and ineffective treatment modalities have left both physicians and patients displeased. A lot of research has shown both the use and efficacy of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in the treatment of PCOS.
Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and factors associated with the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine among PCOS patients in Klang Valley Malaysia through the Health Belief Model and Health Locus of Control.
Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 180 PCOS patients attending gynecology clinics across hospitals in Klang Valley aged ≥18 years. They were recruited using convenience sampling. A validated self-administered questionnaire was used. SPSS version 26.0 was used to analyze data.
Results: A total of 180 women participated in this study. 57.8% reported using complementary and alternative medicine. 69.3% use Vitamins and supplements. Side effects were experienced by 12.8% of the respondents.
Perceived benefit was found to be the only significant predictor (OR 2.0147, p=0.008) of CAM among PCOS patients. The constructs of perceived severity (OR 0.878, p=0.625), perceived barriers (OR 0.674, p=0.224) and Health locus of Control (OR 1.402, p=0.307) were not found to have a statistically significant relationship with the use of CAM
Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that respondents are inclined to use CAM upon perceiving potential benefits, regardless of perceived barriers, severity, and beliefs regarding control.
