Title: Validation of domains and competencies for gynecology and obstetrics by focus groups and expert judgment

Abstract

As part of the attributions of the Mexican Board of Gynecology and Obstetrics, it is to certify physicians in this specialty with the aim of providing quality care to patients. The Board is in the process of modifying its evaluation process with the intention of making it more objective and closer to the reality of recent graduates and professional physicians who must recertify in five years. In this way, a qualitative methodology was generated with the intention of validating the new construct to be evaluated based on domains and competencies. The root of this work is due to the international and national trend of using competency based medical education, determining domains and competencies that physicians of different specialties must develop, for that reason, it is consistent that the evaluation model is based on in the same educational conception. The validation was carried out in four phases; Phase 1: Literature review and preparation of a first proposal of domains and competencies; phase 2: Four focus groups simultaneously with national representation, to raise the domains and competencies; phase 3: Adaptation of the proposal based on the comments of the four focus groups; and phase 4: Subject the final work to expert judgment validation to achieve agreement. As conclusions of the work, a list of domains and competencies appropriate to the context of Mexican physicians could be determined, which is valid by a group of experts. This becomes the first step to create the specifications table for the new board evaluation model.
