Recent, devastating health challenge the world is facing is the global pandemic caused by novel corona virus. The natural course of the disease has been studied extensively and Clinical manifestations of this infection may range from being asymptomatic or mild upper airway infection to fatal pneumonia and higher complication rate with Immunocompromised individuals. Physiological changes during pregnancy brings pregnancy women under high-risk population, immunological adaptation contributing to it on a large scale. Lot of research have been concentrated on the effect of symptomatic covid infection on pregnancy relating to adverse outcomes. This study was undertaken to assess the outcome of the pregnancy among the asymptomatic COVID carriers.
This was a prospective observational study done over a period of 6 months in 2020. Asymptomatic covid carriers who were admitted were included in the studied and followed till postpartum. The occurrence of anemia, obstetric cholestasis of pregnancy, abortions, Gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, Abruptio placenta, GDM, hypothyroid, SGA, oligohydramnios, IUGR in the study group and the outcome of pregnancy was assessed in the form of gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, low APGAR score and need for NICU admission, Intra Uterine Death, incidence of miscarriages. The incidence and the outcomes of the study group was compared with non covid carriers after matching the maternal age and gestational age. This research showed that the association between the medical disorders – anemia, hypothyroidism, SGA and asymptomatic covid carriers were highly significant with p-value<0.01. The other Medical Conditions including Cholestasis of pregnancy, GDM, GHTN, primary cesarean section rate, oligohydramnios also showed significant correlation with p-value<0.05. But no significant association could be established between the study group and control group in terms of miscarriages, chronic hypertension, IUD, IUGR, low apgar with NICU stay, abruption, pre eclampsia and preterm delivery.
