Incidence of hot flashes in Indian women

Abstract

Vasomotor symptoms, mainly hot flashes, are the mainstay of Hormonal replacement therapy.  It is important to know the incidence of Hot flashes in the population, to garner the need for medical treatment, advice to the public, and so on, so that care and effort towards this end is adequate, yet not overdone. , The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicodemographic profile of women aged 40–60 years and correlate it with the prevalence and severity of hot flashes.   This multicentric observational study investigated 1479 women all over India, focusing on the prevalence of hot flashes in Indian women aged 40–60 years. The results showed that overall, the incidence was 37.6% which is quite significant, with 24.7%, 10.8%, and 2.23% reporting severity of mild, moderate, and severe intensity, respectively. Concomitant symptoms such as night sweats, abdominal discomfort, sleep disturbances, and chest discomfort were experienced. Hysterectomy was significantly associated with the prevalence of hot flashes (P < 0.001). Out of 121 hysterectomised women studied, data on removal of ovaries or not were available only in 78 women, and in this population, the percentage of women with hot flashes was 63% when ovaries were left alone and 76%  when both ovaries were removed.   BMI, religion, education, and employment status did not exhibit significant associations with hot flashes among Indian women, with regional variations.
